The The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism and the American Academy of Pediatrics do not generally recommend sex hormone treatment for transgender youth before the age of 16. The target age of 16 has more to do with a teen’s ability to completely understand some of the irreversible effects of hormone treatment rather than ensuring the young person has passed some type of physiological threshhold.

Once a team of family, medical, and mental health workers agree that sex hormone treatment is an appropriate next step for a transgender teen or tween, certain physical changes will take place over the next couple of years. A summary of those changes, as documented in medical literature, are listed in the 2 tables below.
